June started out with Hunter and Katelyn heading to The Wilds in North Carolina for a week. This was Hunter's third trip there and Katelyn's first. Naturally I was worried about Katelyn being so far away from home for a whole week, but she loved it. My house was way too quiet while they were gone, but I found some good books to read so I enjoyed a little alone time. They got back on Saturday, June 9. Both kids had an amazing time and can't wait to go back. I think I'll go with them next summer too.
On Friday, June 15, Lori and I headed to the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater to see the Daughtry concert. It was the first concert I had gone to there and I was impressed. It's an outdoor venue on the river, just down from the office where I work downtown. We had a great time (of course) singing and dancing along with the music. Daughtry sounds really good in person - just like on the radio. That's not always the case with bands. If you get a chance, go see them. Lori and I also spent the afternoon of June 17 getting some sun at the pool. I've said it before and I'll say it again, girl talk is good for the soul. And getting a tan and playing the water isn't so bad either.
Since I was getting ready to head to Savannah on the 22nd for my nephew's wedding, I had some shopping to do on the 18th. You see, all of my dresses are now too big for me. Yes, you read that right. They are too big. So I had to buy a new one. Bought two new ones actually. And a new pair of shorts. And they were FOUR sizes smaller than I wore last year. Best reason ever to go shopping. Got my nails done on the 21st (which I never do) and headed to Scottsboro after work that day. Spent the night there and my niece Rebecca, my brother Larry and I hit the road to Savannah at 6 am on the 22nd. Rebecca and I put on a little in-car concert on the way there to pass the time. Larry was a good sport and listened to our crazy music without complaint. Once we got to Savannah, we ate at the Mellow Mushroom and walked around downtown for a while. The scenery was beautiful. We got ready and walked next door to the rehearsal dinner that night. We enjoyed spending time with family and friends for a while. Then we decided to check out the Savannah night life. We wound up at Churchills bar, which is where the wedding party was. We hung out with them for a little while before we called it a night. The next morning, we headed over to Tybee Island. We toured the lighthouse and the museum and walked out on the beach. The beach isn't like the beaches I'm used to in the Gulf of Mexico. There was lots of seaweed and junk on the beach. It made me appreciate Orange Beach and Panama City. I'll take the Gulf over the east coast beaches any day. After we got back to the hotel, Rebecca and I hit the pool to relax a little. Then we got ready for the wedding.
The ceremony was at 7:30 at St. John the Baptist Cathedral just a block from our hotel. We walked over and Larry and I made our entrance with the aunts and uncles just before the wedding party. The ceremony was beautiful. Scott looked very handsome in his tux. It was hard to believe he's old enough to get married, even though he's only 5 years younger than I am. There were trolleys that took everyone over to the Hyatt Regency on the river for the reception. The reception was in the same room as the American Idol auditions. Being a reality TV junkie, I thought that was so cool. We ate, drank and danced the night away. It was one heck of a party and everyone enjoyed themselves. After the reception ended, we headed up to the hotel bar and chatted for a while longer. They finally kicked us out around 2 am so we walked across the street to Churchills for one last drink. We finally made it back to our room around 3 am. Not bad for some old people. Sunday morning we headed back to Scottsboro and I headed back to Northport. We had a great weekend and I will definitely go back to Savannah again.
On the 27th, I went to see a retina specialist. My regular eye doctor noticed some tearing at my annual check and wanted a specialist to take a look. The specialist saw the same thing, so on July 11, I will have a laser procedure on my left eye. Then on July 25, I'll have the same procedure on my right eye. I will admit I'm a little nervous about it. The idea of having my eye held open while a laser zaps my retina freaks me out, but the odds of my retina completely detaching will be slim after this. So it will be worth it in the end. That night, the kids and I went bowling with the Stroups. Bowling 5 games after working out is not the best idea. My arm felt like jello by the time we were done, but we all had fun.
On the 29th, I went to the movies with some friends to watch Magic Mike. It was the ultimate girls' night out movie. I won't ruin it for anyone who reads this and hasn't seen the movie, but I have a new celebrity crush on Channing Tatum now. That's all I'll say. :)
Those were the highlights in addition to the ordinary everyday stuff. Hunter had basketball camp the first 2 weeks of June and football workouts every Monday-Thursday all month. I am still going to the gym 4-5 days a week. I just ended week 20 of working out and I feel better than I have in a long time. I'm slowly losing more weight and, more importantly, more inches. I think I'll be able to buy shorts 5 sizes smaller before the end of July. That's my goal. We'll see if I meet it in the next update. Until then, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer as much as we are.
