The Wonderful Month of May

May started out with Hunter giving his testimony in Bible class at school.  His teacher told me he did a great job and let me read what he had written.  The class had an assignment to write their testimonies and then they each took their turn to stand up in front of the class and read what they had written.  When Hunter's turn came, he said he didn't need his paper.  He knew what he wanted to say.  I wish I could have heard him that day. I was told that he did an excellent job.  All of the kids did an excellent job with that assignment.  Just one of many reasons I am so proud of my son.

Mother's Day came and my wonderful kids gave me a couple of beautiful cards, hugs and kisses.  Doesn't get much better than that.  Being a mom is the hardest job there is, but it is by far the most rewarding.  I wouldn't trade it for the world.  I also treated myself to a movie with a friend.  Lori and I went to see The Five-Year Engagement.  We ate popcorn (of course) and laughed until we cried.

I wound up getting some more baseball tickets on the 18th (first row right behind home plate), so Hunter and I invited a couple of friends, Taylor and his mom Tamalon, and we watched the Alabama-Georgia game.  It was Senior Night so we watched each Senior on the team get recognized.  Alabama won big - 7 to 0.  Hunter got autographs from the team after the game as usual.  The UA baseball players are a great bunch of guys.  They each grab a Sharpie and sign autographs for everyone who wants them after every game.  They even take time to talk to the fans and have pictures taken.  It's one of my favorite things to see - the kids' faces light up as the players talk to them.  Roll Tide.

On Saturday the 19th, Chad Henderson and Aimee DeLauro had their wedding.  I work with both of them and they really are the cutest couple.  My friend Linde flew in from Minnesota for the wedding, so Lori and I headed to Birmingham around lunch time to pick her up.  We all looked pretty dang good if I do say so myself.  If you need proof, here it is.  How cute are we?

Since I have lost some weight, I had to go shopping for a dress to wear. I wound buying a dress 3 sizes smaller than the last one I bought.  3 sizes.  I was ecstatic.  So I put on makeup and heels and enjoyed my new dress.  I got lots of compliments, which put a smile on my face of course.  More motivation to keep up my hard work in the gym.  More on that later.  The wedding was at 4 at the Cypress Inn Pavilion by the river.  It was a beautiful day and the ceremony was wonderful.  We stayed for the reception and laughed and danced with some friends.  Then Lori, Linde and I had a old-fashioned slumber party.  We all stayed at Lori's house with big plans for going out and partying a little.  We wound up watching a movie and falling asleep on the couch (well Lori and Linde did.  I made it through the movie before I crashed).  We are party animals.  LOL! The next morning, we talked for a while (girl talk is good for the soul) then headed to IHOP for a little brunch before we took Linde back to the airport.  It was a little preview of our upcoming girls trip.

May 24th was the last day of school for the kids - the last day of 3rd grade for Katelyn and the last day of 8th grade for Hunter.  I am now officially the mother of a high school freshman.  How did this happen?  How can my baby be old enough to be in high school?  How can I be old enough to have a son in high school?  I'm in a bit of denial I think.  I'm afraid that the next four years will go by much faster than I'd like.  I'm afraid that on the first day of school in August I will be in tears just like I was when he started kindergarten.  I thought this was supposed to get easier.  Don't get me wrong.  I have thoroughly enjoyed watching him become the wonderful young man he is today.  I just wish time would slow down just a bit.  I think that's every mother's wish.  That night we went to the NRCA Sports Banquet.  I had so much fun watching the kids I got to know during the year receive their awards.  They really are a great group of kids and I am proud of every one of them.  I can't wait to watch them all play again in the fall.

On Saturday the 26th, Hunter, Katelyn and I loaded up to go pick up Lori and her son Jeffrey.  We spent the afternoon at the Birmingham Zoo.  I hadn't been to the zoo in a while.  It was the perfect day to be outside and we had a lot of fun.  We walked all over that place looking at the animals.  We all fed the lorikeets and rode the train and the carousel.  We got to see a baby orangutan, lion cubs, the sea lion show, the tiger get in the water to cool down, and too many other animals to name.  Jeffrey even got spit on by a llama.  We had dinner at Pablo's before we headed back home.  We were worn out by the time we got back to our house, around 10:00 that night, but we all had smiles.  Lori and I had fun listening to the conversations of our two teenage boys on the way there and back too.  They cracked us up a few times.

On the 28th, Memorial Day, I enjoyed a much-needed day off of work.  The kids helped me clean and as a reward we went to the movies.  They wanted to see Men In Black 3 in 3D.  We all love the Men In Black movies and this one did not disappoint us.  I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but there is a very good twist at the end that I wasn't expecting.  It's a pretty good movie.  After the movie, we went shopping to get some things that the kids need for camp.  They are both going to The Wilds in North Carolina next week (June 4-9).  I'm going to miss them but I know they'll have a great time.  Hunter begged me to buy the movie Real Steel while we were shopping, so we watched that Monday night when we got home.  Another good movie.  The kids are on a roll for picking good movies lately.

Today marked the end of week 16 in the gym for me.  I've been pretty consistent with my workouts, going 4-5 days a week for about 1 1/2 hours each day.  My endurance is increasing.  I was finally able to reach my goal of 30 minutes on the elliptical at the beginning of the month and I've kept that pace every day since.  I usually get about 5.25 miles in during that 30 minutes.  Not too bad.  Then I ride the bike for 20 minutes (about 7.5 miles), lift weights for about 20 minutes, then jog/walk on the treadmill for another 15 minutes.  I've been averaging around 14 miles total during that time.  I look and feel better than I have since college.  I'm hooked.

All in all, it was another busy but fun month.  June is looking like it will be even busier with camp for the kids and football conditioning starting back up.  And I'm sure we'll have a little fun too. We usually do.  :)
