We began March with a trip to the doctor for me on the 1st. This crazy hot-cold-hot-cold weather we’ve had has played havoc with my sinuses so I went to the doctor and got a couple of shots and some antibiotics to try to get rid of this crap. Everyone I know has been having the same issues. This could be a bad spring for me sinus-wise. That night, the kids and I loaded up and headed to Scottsboro. We hadn’t been up for a visit since Christmas so we were all excited. After I got my taxes done on Saturday, some family and friends came over to my niece’s house for a cook out. We had a great time playing cards and talking until way past my bedtime. On Sunday, we all watched the last of the Twilight movies, Breaking Dawn Part 2, and then me and the kids headed back home. We stopped by the cemetery on our way out of town to say hi to my mom and dad. March 1 would have been my dad’s 83rd birthday. It still seems strange to go back to Scottsboro and not see him while we’re there. But we love visiting the rest of our family and seeing our friends. I wish we got to see them more often.
On the 9th, I took Hunter shopping for a suit. He needed one for the upcoming Beauty Walk since he will be an escort and really he just needed one in general. He wasn’t too thrilled about spending some time in the mall shopping, but Katelyn and I had fun picking out things for him to try on. We finally found one that fit and I must say my son cleans up well. He looked so handsome in his suit and tie. Now we’re all ready for the Beauty Walk on the 15th.
I took both kids to the optometrist on the 12th for their annual eye exams. They both needed new glasses. After about an hour, Katelyn finally found the perfect frames (much to Hunter’s relief since he had picked his out in the first 5 minutes) and we went home. I also had my eyes checked to make sure my laser surgery to repair my torn retinas was successful. Everything looked good.
On the 15th, I checked Katelyn out of school at noon so we could have a little time to relax before our Beauty Walk preparations began. We stopped at Subway and picked up some lunch before we headed home. After she ate and took a shower, we relaxed for about an hour before we started on her makeup. After we had her makeup perfected, we headed over to our friend Tanya’s house to get her hair done. She loves getting ready for these Beauty Walks because she is the center of attention for the day. When Tanya finished with her hair, we put her dress and shoes on and snapped a few pictures before we went back to the house to pick up Byron and Hunter. I almost cried when I saw Hunter in his suit. He looked so grown up. I know I’m prejudiced, but I have some really good-looking kids. We all went to the school and got Katelyn checked in for the pageant. I had the photographer take pictures of Katelyn alone and of her with Hunter. Might as well get some good pictures of them while they’re both dressed up. I set up the video camera (of course) and waited for the pageant to begin. The preschoolers were first and they were all so cute in their dresses. We had 3 age groups for the preschoolers so their part of the pageant took about an hour. Then after a short intermission, the elementary school girls came out. Katelyn was in the second group (2nd – 6th grade). There were 7 girls in her group and she was the only 4th grader. There was also only one 5th grader and one 6th grader. The other 4 girls were in 2nd and 3rd grade. After Katelyn’s group, there were the 7th and 8th grade girls and the 9th – 12th grade girls. After all of the girls had their turn on the stage, the winners were crowned in each group. Katelyn won 2nd runner up in her group. She got a sash, a rose and a trophy. The 6th grader in her group won 1st runner up and the 5th grader won queen. She was a little upset that she didn’t win queen (she won 1st runner up in her group last year, so she had a good chance at winning this year), but a trip to Chic-Fil-A with friends and a milkshake seemed to drastically improve her mood. Even though she didn’t win the tiara this year (and she REALLY wanted that tiara), she’s still my beauty queen.
The next day Hunter and I went to the NRCA baseball game. We hadn’t been to a baseball game yet and the weather was just too nice to stay inside. We both got some much needed sun while we cheered for our team. The game didn’t go our way, but we had fun watching the game and hanging out with friends. That afternoon, Hunter and I went to AT&T to upgrade our phones. We were both due for an upgrade and Hunter’s phone was dying so he really needed a new one. It was my old iPhone 3GS so it had just about surpassed its lifespan. I surprised him by getting him a new iPhone 5. I got one as well. We spent the rest of the night setting up our new phones and playing with them. They are pretty cool. Since my old iPhone 4 was deactivated, I gave it to Katelyn to use as an iPod touch. I spent a good bit of time after church the next day getting everything set up for her to use it. Now we all have new toys to play with.
We got up bright and early on the 18th for our 7:00 am dentist appointments. Most people who know me know that I am not a morning person, so getting anywhere by 7:00 am is difficult. We somehow made it on time and we all got our teeth cleaned. Hunter and I had no cavities (yay us), and Katelyn only had 2 small cavities. Hunter, however, was referred to an orthodontist to be evaluated for braces. So on the 22nd, we went to Tuscaloosa Orthodontics and met with Dr. Hughes. The verdict is that braces are needed. I was hoping for something a little less drastic (and less expensive), but no such luck. Dr. Hughes thinks the braces can come off before Hunter has his senior pictures taken though. That was the good news. Hunter took the news well and we set up the appointment to get his braces put on at 8:00 am on the 25th.
What a way to start Spring Break – getting braces put on! But we thought that would give Hunter a week to get used to them and get over any soreness before he went back to school. He was a fantastic patient (as usual) and Dr. Hughes had the braces put on in about an hour. Hunter picked red for his first O-ring color so he would be wearing the appropriate color for A-Day. I love that kid! A true Tide fan all the way. I stopped and got him a biscuit from Hardees on the way home so he could eat before his mouth got too sore. By lunch time, he said his teeth were getting a little sore but it wasn’t too painful. Bless his heart. I hated having to get braces put on him because I knew it would hurt. Even though he’s almost 15, he’s still my little boy and I hate the thought of him being in pain.
On the 26th, I headed to Birmingham after work to see the Maroon 5 concert with my friend Lori. I’ve become a fan of Adam Levine since The Voice started coming on TV so I was excited about seeing him in concert. Owl City and Neon Trees opened the show and they were pretty good too. Maroon 5 put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Their video screen and lasers were incredible. And they sounded really good live. And, of course, Adam looked pretty good on that stage. Next time, I’ll spring for the closer seats.
Since I had half of a day off on the 29th for Good Friday, Katelyn and I decided this would be a good time to take her birthday trip to Atlanta. She wanted an American Girl doll and I’ve heard that you need to go to the actual store for the full experience, so we did. Hunter was spending the night at a friend’s birthday party anyway, so Katelyn and I spent the night in Atlanta. We got there around 6:30 (our time – Atlanta is an hour ahead of us) and settled into our hotel room. I had paid a little extra for the American Girl package at the hotel (which Katelyn didn’t know), so she was surprised to see goodies waiting for her on her bed. She got a bed for her doll, a t-shirt for her doll, a sleep mask, a goodie bag and milk and cookies. She wanted to go eat dinner at Ruby Tuesday, so that’s where we went. We got back to our room at around 9:00 Atlanta time, so we just relaxed for the rest of the night. The next day, we had some breakfast at the hotel then headed to the mall where the American Girl store is. We had an appointment with a personal shopper at noon but we got there early so we just looked around the store until then. There is a bistro, a bookstore and a doll salon in the store. Our personal shopper was fantastic. She took us through the store and told us about each character doll. They are each from a different era and different region of America and they each have a story. We learned about all of the dolls one by one. Then she took us to the My American Girl section where you can pick out a doll that looks like you. Katelyn picked her doll and then we shopped for some clothes. We got a cute houndstooth skirt outfit, some pajamas, and a pair of jeans and a jacket to go with her t-shirt. Each My American Girl doll comes with a “meet me” outfit, so Katelyn got a matching outfit so she and her doll can dress alike. She also got the “big girl” version of the t-shirt. We also got her doll some glasses. And we got her ears pierced. Finally, we got a special hairbrush for the doll, a bag for Katelyn to carry her doll and all of her accessories in and a few American Girl books. Katelyn LOVES her doll. We ate lunch at Subway in the food court and took a ride on the carousel in the mall before we headed home. We got home around 5:30 that night. A girl only turns 10 once and I hope Katelyn always remembers her 10th birthday trip. We both had a great time shopping and hanging out together. That trip did remind me that I’m not quite as young as I once was though. That 4-hour drive (one-way) wore this Mama out! But it was totally worth it to see the smile on my baby girl’s face.
We ended the month by celebrating Easter. The Easter Bunny visited us on Sunday morning and both kids got way too much candy, as usual.
It’s hard to believe ¼ of this year is already past. Time flies when you’re having fun and we are having lots of fun! Was I actually worried about us being bored? What was I thinking??! Hope you're having as much fun as we are. Until next time....
