November - A Month of Thanksgiving

November is the month of Thanksgiving and I have a lot to be thankful for this year. As you have read over the months, I have done some really fun things with family and friends. Things haven’t always been the best this year, but I really can’t complain. I have more than most and for that I am incredibly thankful.

The month started with, you guessed it, football. Alabama played LSU in the rematch of the century on the 3rd. The game was in Baton Rouge so I had to settle for watching this one on TV. It was a nail biter with Alabama trailing most of the game. Then in the last minute and a half, Alabama put together an amazing drive. They marched down the field and scored a touchdown to keep their winning streak alive. People went crazy everywhere – my house included. We screamed and jumped up and down in front of our TV like idiots. You do what you gotta do to cheer your team on to victory.

The next Saturday, the 10th, we were back at Bryant-Denny stadium to sell some radios and watch Alabama play Texas A&M. It was a beautiful day and the Tide went into the game a favorite to win. But alas, that wasn’t meant to be. This team that I love just seems to feel the need to break my heart at least once every season. We left the stadium feeling down that night and the Tide fell from #1 in the polls to #4. Our hopes of winning National Championship #15 were crushed that night. Unless the stars align correctly and a couple of key teams lose a game…..

The 13th marked the beginning of basketball season for the NRCA Chargers. The varsity girls and boys teams played games against alumni teams that night. We had a great time watching players old and new compete in a little friendly basketball. I joined Katelyn for lunch at school on the 15th to celebrate Thanksgiving before the kids began their fall break. We had fun chatting with her friends while we ate together. Then on the 16th, we travelled to Montevallo to watch the Chargers play basketball against Evangel Christian. The JV boys (Hunter’s team) won, but the girls and the varsity boys weren’t so lucky. The loss for the varsity boys marked the end of a 50-game win streak. All good things must come to an end though, and this was no different. I’m still looking forward to a great basketball season for our teams.

We were back at Bryant-Denny stadium early on the 17th for the Western Carolina game. This game was really just a warm up for the next game, the Iron Bowl. The Tide won big and we went home happy. The kids also went home with some extra money. They were selling candy bars for a school fund raiser after the game and got a $46 tip! Also, the stars did align correctly and the 2 key teams that needed to lose did. Alabama was back at #2 in the polls with renewed hopes of another National Championship. Can miracles happen two years in a row? Something very similar happened last year and Alabama earned National Championship #14. I guess we’ll have to wait and see but I have high hopes for a repeat.

I took the week of Thanksgiving off since the kids were out of school so we spent the week being a little lazy. We went to visit Byron’s family on Wednesday and stayed until Friday. While we were there, we enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving with his family. His sister and I went to the movies to watch the new (and last) movie in the Twilight series. It was the best movie yet and even though it strayed from the book more than the previous movies, I still enjoyed it. I broke tradition and skipped Black Friday shopping this year. I just didn’t see anything on sale that I HAD to have, so I slept in instead.

Saturday the 24th was a VERY important day in Tuscaloosa. It was Iron Bowl day. Auburn was coming to town to try and kill our National Championship hopes. After selling some radios, we headed into the stadium to watch the beat down that was about to occur. Alabama shut Auburn out 49-0 and the game ended with an extended and very loud Rammer Jammer cheer. Hunter and I went to every Alabama home game this year (Katelyn went to most of them too) and also to the Michigan game in Texas at the beginning of the season. We had a great fall spending most of our Saturdays at the stadium and I wouldn’t trade those memories for the world.

The NRCA Chargers travelled to Pickens Academy on the 27th for more basketball. The JV and varsity boys both won their games but the girls came up short again. That’s all of the basketball we’ll play this month, so all 3 teams will have a little time to get some practice in before the next game on December 3rd.

That pretty much sums up our month. Now we’re getting ready to watch Alabama play Georgia for the SEC Championship (and hopefully clinch a spot in the National Championship game), and we’re getting into basketball full swing. It’s hard to believe this year is almost over. Just one more month and we’ll wrap up 2012. Remember to be thankful for what you have ALL YEAR, not just in November. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
